A periodontist is a dentist who specialises in periodontics and has undergone specialist training in the discipline of periodontics. They are therefore specially trained to perform procedures in this particular area of dentistry and carry out periodontal evaluations.

When you make a visit to your dentist or the hygenist, they will remove plaque build-up from the gum line and thoroughly clean your teeth. This is done to help fight off the early symptoms of gum disease and decrease the chances of it getting worse.
If the disease has gotten progressively worse and cannot be treated by a dentist or hygienist then a specialist periodontist will need to treat the condition.
