The term Periodontics refers to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of conditions and diseases which affect the supporting structures of the teeth. Periodontitis, or ‘gum disease’, is one of the most common diseases in the world.
The Smile Boutiques periodontal therapies go beyond what is normally offered by general dentists, with advanced treatments and techniques with our in-house Periodontal specialist.
Gum disease may not be serious if identified and treated in the early stages. The key is to treat the gum disease and ensure your gums are returned to a healthy condition.
Periodontal treatment targets main areas such as gums and the jawbone when they have been seriously affected or damaged by disease or decay
Leaving gum disease untreated for too long is one of the main reasons for the loss of teeth.
There is now increasing evidence linking gum disease with heart disease and strokes. There is also on-going research that links various other diseases such as stroke, diabetes, and osteoporosis with periodontal problems. There are various different treatments for gum disease and after a thorough consultation, your treatment options will be discussed with you.
Regular smokers are believed to be at a much higher risk of developing periodontal problems compared to non-smokers. Medical specialists and trained doctors are becoming more and more aware of the need for periodontal treatment before suggestive alternative medical treatment or referrals.
A periodontist is a dentist who specialises in periodontics and has undergone specialist training in the discipline of periodontics. They are therefore specially trained to perform procedures in this particular area of dentistry and carry out periodontal evaluations.
A periodontal evaluation is usually the only way to accurately identify a periodontal disease. You may need a periodontal evaluation if you experience any of the following symptoms:
When you make a visit to your dentist or the hygenist, they will remove plaque build-up from the gum line and thoroughly clean your teeth. This is done to help fight off the early symptoms of gum disease and decrease the chances of it getting worse.
If the disease has gotten progressively worse and cannot be treated by a dentist or hygienist then a specialist periodontist will need to treat the condition.
We understand the importance of having healthy gums which is why we’re here to plan an effective, long-lasting bespoke treatment plan tailored to your individual clinical needs.
Our in-house Periodontist accepts both referrals to us by your dentist, or you come to us through self-referral, we aim to provide you with the highest standard of care possible.
If you find yourself exhibiting any signs of gum disease, please call The Smile Boutique on 01733 551 534 to book an appointment with our periodontist.
