At The Smile Boutique, our focus is on preventative dentistry, to show how important this core belief is to us, we offer all our children a complimentary dental examination twice a year (with a registered parent).

This not only provides peace of mind for you but nurtures good habits that continue into later life. This is why we offer complimentary dental health checks to children of our regular clients.

A Dentist for Children In Peterborough

At The Smile Boutique, we provide a friendly, relaxed, and calm environment which we believe puts children at ease throughout all areas of treatment. Teaching your child good oral hygiene at a young age is an investment in their health that will stay with them for life. It can be useful to set a good example by taking care of your own teeth and by having regular dental check-ups.

Children have different dental care needs than adults, such as more frequent fluoride applications, dental sealants, and education on dental hygiene and diet.

The Smile Boutique places great emphasis on prevention through patient and parent education, so your child can enjoy a cavity-free life. By introducing your child to a dentist’s practice early on in life, you can inhibit dental anxiety.

Dental Hygiene for Children

Establishing healthy habits into your child’s daily oral routine is a vital part of maintaining good dental hygiene for them from a young age.

Children tend to have all of their baby teeth by the age of 3, these are called primary teeth. By the age of 6, these teeth start to fall out and that’s when the permanent, or adult, teeth start developing. Visible gaps between baby teeth are normal, they make room for permanent teeth. The most permanent teeth develop by the age of 13.

Here are some tips and techniques to help keep your child’s teeth strong and healthy from as young as 3 years old, when they develop their baby teeth:

  • Use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste (about a pea-sized amount) and make sure your child spits it out after brushing.
  • Ensure your child brushes their teeth for at least 2 minutes twice a day.
  • Introduce your child to flossing as soon as their teeth start touching, building good habits early on is an effective way to maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Help your child when they are brushing and flossing, and give them reminders to pay attention to the back teeth.
  • Visit the dentist regularly, every 6 months.
