At The Smile Boutique our aim is to prevent the two major causes of tooth loss – decay and gum disease.

Preventive dentistry helps you care for your teeth and gums so that they remain healthy. A good preventive routine keeps gum disease, cavities, enamel wear, and other dental problems at bay.

  • Regular Dental Health Checkups- Routine visits allow your dentist to recognise and treat the early onset of cavities, gingivitis, and other problems. Early detection prevents expensive dental problems later.
  • X-rays- Dental x-rays will reveal decay, gingivitis, wisdom teeth, and other dental conditions that are not always immediately visible. Your dentist can then treat them before they progress.

Regular Dental Hygienist Appointments

  • Home Care- Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and use a dental rinse afterwards. Daily flossing or Interdental brushes such as Tepe are also recommended to remove food trapped between your teeth.
  • Fissure Sealants- Fissure sealants are white, plastic coatings that are painted onto the biting surface of the back teeth. These biting surfaces are criss‐crossed with tiny pits and fissures, which provide a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. To prevent cavities in these pits and fissures you can cover them with a special composite varnish called fissure sealant, which has been shown to achieve a six‐fold reduction in caries development (compared to a tooth without fissure sealants).

The application of these fissure sealants are a simple procedure and children are comfortable with the procedure and the benefits are amazing.

  • Mouth Cancer Screening- Studies show that mouth cancer is on the increase and that early detection dramatically improves the chances of recovery. The screening involves a thorough examination of your whole mouth during routine dental health examinations and hygienist visits.

Other aspects of a good preventive dental routine include:

  • Giving up smoking
  • Giving up sugary, cavity-causing foods
  • Regular calcium intake

Your dentist can provide even more suggestions on how to take the best possible care of your teeth and keep your smile both radiant and healthy.

Prevention also means recommending treatment to reinforce a tooth to protect it and ensure it doesn’t break in the future. For example, if a tooth is cracked or weak and in danger of breaking, a new filling or crown may be advised to protect it. This is always better than waiting until the breakage happens, perhaps even as an emergency.
