Question & Answer

How long does a tooth extraction take?
A tooth extraction is a very straightforward dental procedure that only takes a short amount of time to do. You should generally expect to spend 20-30 minutes in the dentist chair for a run of the mill extraction.
However, if you are having several teeth extracted it may take several hours to complete the procedure.
Is tooth extraction painful?
In general, patients won’t feel any pain during a tooth extraction. But if you’re having a wisdom tooth extraction, you may hear creaking and snapping during the procedure. This is a perfectly normal sound to hear during a wisdom tooth extraction.
Can I eat after a tooth extraction?
Yes, but it’s vital that you stick to certain foods. Try to eat only soups, yogurts, and ice cream, or things like mashed potato and scrambled eggs.
You should ideally avoid chewing on the extraction side of your mouth for two weeks in order to fully heal the area.
How long does it take for the hole to close after a tooth extraction?
The bones of the extracted area will begin to heal after only one week. Within 10-12 weeks the bone tissue should have almost fully covered the exposed area.
You should expect to be fully healed from the procedure within 3-4 months of the tooth extraction.
